Armenia to Import Up to 5,000 Tons of Onions Duty-Free Following EEC Decision

The AFM team has analyzed the decision by the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC): Armenia will be granted the right to import up to 5 000 tons of onions without paying customs duties. This exemption will be active as part of temporary measures to stabilize vegetable prices across EAEU countries.

The decision was adopted by the EEC Council and applies to a range of vegetables supplied to various member states of the union. Specifically, a duty-free import quota of up to 5 000 tons of onions has been allocated for Armenia.

The measure is temporary and will remain in effect until June 30, 2026. Such steps are introduced to compensate for seasonal vegetable shortages and represent an attempt to curb rising vegetable prices. Onion prices may stabilize or grow at a slower rate, particularly during the off-season:

  1. The risk of market shortages is reduced.
  2. Competition among suppliers increases, which exerts downward pressure on prices.

It is important to understand that the effect is not always immediate – much depends on logistics and actual import volumes. However, overall, such measures work toward reducing price pressure on the consumer.
